“Indian best Oncologist- The father of bone marrow Transplantion – Dr. Suresh advani”

Dr. Suresh advani is one of the most famous oncologists in India. Despite of being a handicapped person, he is the best doctor when it comes to cancer. At the age of 8, he was affected by polio. In 1955, there was no treatment for polio, so his left side got paralyzed. He feels that cancer can be cured and he has proved this by handling many cases. This belief in him stands out from other doctors.  His dedication to cure the cancer made him one of the top oncologists in India. Dr Suresh Advani has received many prestigious awards from govt of India.

Career:

He worked at Tata Memorial Hospital for many years as a medical oncologist. He also worked as the chief investigator for acute Lymphoblastic leukemia project supported by National Cancer Institute Washington and chronic Lymphatic project supported by Department of science and Technology. He is one the top oncologist in India.

Social Work:

He is running a NGO ‘’Helping Hands’’ which provides Holistic Cancer Care. Helping Hand operates from Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre with a group of volunteers who go themselves into the wards each day to keep a check and look after the psycho-social needs of the patients. They are provided with all kinds of information and the volunteers also play a significant role in breaking a number of myths and fears attached to the cancer. Most of the volunteers are cancer survivors themselves or have had their near and dear ones encounter this disease. This experience along with volunteer training sessions provided each month, enables them to solve almost every query that patients and their relatives put forth.

Education:

His schooling was from a Hindi medium school at Ghatkopar, Mumbai and become a graduate of the Somaiya College. As he was physically challenged he didn’t got admission in Grand Medical College. After sending many request letters in order to get admission to the college head, the dean of the college granted admission to Dr. Advani. Dr Advani then wanted to do specialization in Oncology but there were no good facilities in India. So he went to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research centre in Seattle, where he got a chance to work with Dr E Donall Thomas who is a 1990’s Noble Prize winner.

His journey :

The family of Suresh Advani settled at Ghatkopar (Mumbai), at the age of eight he was attacked by polio which led to a paralysis of his lower limb. He didn’t allow his physically challenged status to play as an obstacle in his education. He completed his schooling from a Sindhi medium school at Ghatkopar, Mumbai and did his graduation from Somaiya College. He decided to get degree from Grand Medical College yet this was not an easy process. . After many request letters to the college head and the ministers, the dean of the college granted admission to Dr. Advani. It was his determination which made him to reach here for where he wished and constantly kept working for it.

During his final year, he was denied a house-job where the student undergoes a supervised clinical training session. Mumbai based physician, Dr Lele memorizes the days – This was in the late 60s. I gave him the house job and he went on and completed his MD (doctor of medicine) in general medicine under my guidance. Dr Advani then went to do specialization in Oncology which did not have any facilities in India. So he travelled to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle where he got a chance to work with Dr E Donall Thomas who is a 1990’s Noble Prize winner.

His Vision over Cancer:

An effective treatment at the right time can gift life back to the cancer patient. He has saved many lives through his treatment, care and experience. He has over 35 years of rich experience in his field.

Everything is possible from will and core determination. Most of the doctors who do not use the word curable he also uses the phrase “Curative Intent”. He feels that the cancer can be cured, he uses chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells. He is also very careful while calculating the doses to be given to the patient as the doses can have life threatening side effects. While prescribing medicines and treatment he rigorously takes care of various aspects like age, height, weight, blood counts, kidney diseases etc.
