10 natural remedies for a candida overgrowth (Vaginal Yeast Infection)

Vaginal Yeast infection or vaginal candidiasis is caused due to an overgrowth of a fungus that naturally resides in your vagina, called Candida albicans. This overgrowth triggers irritation, swelling, itching, and painful discharge. Most females experience a yeast infection sometime during their lifetime. Some of such home remedies use ingredients that might already be present in your home. Their effectiveness varies, and evidence for their success is mostly anecdotal.

  1. Greek yogurt

Probiotics can be effective in fighting against C. Albicans. Yogurt is considered a natural probiotic as it contains live bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus. These bacteria are essential to building a healthy environment in the vagina. They can help in treating an overgrowth caused due to an imbalance.

  1. Boric acid

Boric Acid is a powerful antiseptic used by many females for treating yeast infections that are resistant to other remedies. Boric acid is toxic in large amounts. It can lead to kidney damage, acute failure of the circulatory system, or death if you absorb enough of it. To avoid this, don’t use boric acid on broken skin and don’t take it orally. A pregnant female should not use boric acid in any form.

  1. The essential oil of oregano

Common oregano, or Origanum marjoram, can be easily found in the grocery store’s spice section. The oil of oregano used to treat yeast infections isn’t the same type, however. It is composed of thymol and carvacrol, which are two very powerful antifungals. Oil of oregano is a natural blood thinner, so don’t use it (diffused or topically) if you take blood thinners for another health condition. Also don’t use it if you have blood-clotting issues, such as from a vitamin K deficiency.

  1. Probiotic suppositories and supplements

Prebiotics can help to restore the bacteria-yeast balance throughout your body. If you begin with a regimen of oral probiotics which contain strains of the Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria, you can bring your digestive tract and vaginal flora back into the healthy state. Eating yogurt is one of the best ways to increase probiotics.

Oral supplements need about 10 days to reach its full effect, so many women use probiotics as vaginal suppositories to see results more quickly. Probiotics have also been proven to be effective for treating vaginosis.

  1. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a fatty oil which comes from the flesh of the raw coconut. The oil has many health benefits, including antifungal properties. Many studies have shown that coconut oil is effective against C. Albicans, making it an effective home remedy with strong evidence that it actually works. To use coconut oil to treat a vaginal yeast infection, be sure to buy pure, organic coconut oil. You can gently apply the oil directly to the affected areas.

  1. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is an incredibly powerful essential oil which is used to kill fungi, bacteria, and virus. Just do not forget to dilute it. You can dilute the tea tree oil with a carrier oil, such as jojoba or coconut oil if it’s going to touch your skin. Already prepared tea tree oil products for vaginal suppositories are the best and safest option to use. Only use tea tree oil sometimes, and never inhale or swallow it. If you have sensitive skin, it is recommended to not use tea tree oil. Discontinue the use if you see any discomfort.

  1. Apple cider vinegar

Another popular natural remedy for yeast infection is an apple cider vinegar bath. An apple cider vinegar bath is not exactly the same as douching, which flushes out all good and bad bacteria from your vagina. Douching leaves you more prone to a reoccurrence of the yeast infection and invites more troubles. Make sure to not douche with apple cider vinegar. Vinegar is supposed to be diluted in water before using it on the skin. You can also opt for adding apple cider vinegar to your diet.

  1. Garlic

Garlic also effectively helps treat vaginal yeast infection at home. If you are willing to use garlic to treat a yeast infection, add some amount of garlic to your diet. It is recommended to insert the garlic in the vagina, but it is not a safe option. Many cases of burns and significant pain have been reported. You should simply do the simple step of adding garlic in foods.

  1. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic against bacteria and yeast. It kills the bad yeast and bacteria. It is produced by Lactobacillus bacteria in the vagina and is part of the biological activity against yeast. While it does not work on every species of yeast, some females say by using hydrogen peroxide topically when they get a yeast infection has really helped them.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a booster for our immune system. A strong immune system lets your body to bring itself back into a healthy balance. Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is rich in antimicrobial components. So some females add it to their diet to treat Candida overgrowth naturally.
